Folklife - - traditions, which are not necessarily old, that are passed on informally (by word of mouth, observation, and imitation) over time and through space. Usually anonymous, it can have:
  • motifs - patterns that stay the same within a tradition.


  • variants - a variation within a tradition, a different version that develops as it is passed on.

Cultural processes -- culture and knowledge passed on through folk, popular, or elite cultural modes.

  • folk culture -- culture and knowledge passed on over time informally, by word of mouth, imitation, and observation.


  • popular culture -- culture and knowledge passed on through mass media, magazines, television, radio, Internet.


  • elite culture -- the culture and knowledge passed on formally through official institutions such as schools, colleges, museums, and conservatories as opposed to folk or popular culture.
